Push

Push notifications through your own app

Send push campaigns and journey steps through your own OneSignal account, to guests who allowed notifications in your app, under the same consent, quiet hours and approval as your emails. Engage holds no device tokens and has no web push of its own.

How does push work in Engage?

You bring your own OneSignal account, the way texts use your own Twilio account. Your developers make one change: they set each OneSignal user's external ID to the guest's Engage ID. You then connect the OneSignal app ID and REST API key, and Engage checks the key with OneSignal before it keeps it.

  • Connect a OneSignal app with its app ID and REST API key, checked with OneSignal first
  • One change in your app: the OneSignal external ID set to the Engage contact ID
  • The key is kept in Engage's credential store, never logged and never shown again
  • One OneSignal app per account, with a connection check and a key you can replace

Who receives a push?

Only guests your app says can receive one. Engage reads each guest's push permission from OneSignal rather than guessing it: every hour across your audience, before a journey step and again just before each push. A guest who unsubscribes in Engage stays unsubscribed even if their phone still allows notifications.

  • Push permission read from OneSignal, never guessed
  • Checked again just before each push, so a guest who turned notifications off is not sent one
  • A guest's own unsubscribe is never undone by the app
  • Held between 21:00 and 08:00 in the guest's own time zone
  • Counted by your message frequency rules alongside email and texts

Where can I use push?

In campaigns, built in the same builder as texts and WhatsApp, and as a Send push step in journeys. Push messages live in their own library with a lock-screen preview. Before you schedule, the estimate shows how many guests a push will reach and why the rest are left out.

  • Push campaigns in the same builder as texts and WhatsApp
  • A Send push step in journeys, offered once your app is connected
  • A message library with a title of up to 100 characters, a message of up to 512, an https link and a lock-screen preview
  • An estimate of who will receive it, with everyone else counted by reason
  • Results as approved, sent, failed and not reached

Can I reach guests in the Purple app?

Yes, where your account shows the Purple app as ready. Guests who use the Purple ConneX app can agree to offers from your brand inside it, and Engage sends only to guests who hold that opt-in for your brand. The app checks consent again when it sends and reports opens back. There is no key to paste.

  • A per-brand opt-in a guest gives inside the Purple app
  • Nothing to paste: the connection uses Purple's own credential
  • Opens and the open rate reported for Purple app pushes
  • Your account shows whether the Purple app is ready or coming soon

Does Engage send web push?

No. Engage sends push only through your own OneSignal app or the Purple app. It holds no device tokens, ships no SDK and has no browser push of its own.

  • No browser push, and no device tokens held by Engage
  • Push campaigns have no A/B tests, resends, local-time sending or best-hour scheduling

Questions

Do I need my own app?

For push through OneSignal, yes: your app registers devices with your own OneSignal account. Push through the Purple app needs no app of your own.

Will a guest get a push at night?

No. Every push is held between 21:00 and 08:00 where the guest is, and sent when that window ends.

Can I see who opened a push?

For the Purple app, yes: opens and the open rate are reported. A OneSignal push reports approved, sent, failed and not reached, with no opens or clicks.

How does push consent work?

Your app owns the device permission, and Engage records what OneSignal reports as the guest's push subscription. A guest's own withdrawal in Engage, such as an unsubscribe, is never undone by the app still holding a device.
